Whenever possible we design the settings for our figures. Sometimes the subject demands a background or a base with groundwork which suggests time and place. The background may be a ‘flat artwork’ backdrop or a much deeper ‘cinematic’ view built in perspective, whatever is convincing and believable. These need not take up much space when  the visitor’s view is limited by trench walls (see WWI trench above), houses or interior walls, etc. – or simply areas of light in a dark world.

More elaborate ‘walk-through’ scenes can present other views through windows or, as in this WWI scene, a view of a trench and into a field dressing station.
